The Australasian Association for Engineering Education, AAEE, is a professional association of academics, support staff, postgraduate students, librarians, professional engineers, and employers who all have vested interests in fostering excellence and innovation in engineering education. The general mission of AAEE is to improve the quality, relevance and performance of engineering education in Australasia.
We invite the AAEE community to contribute technical submissions to AAEE2017 in the spirit of the conference theme “Integrated Engineering”.
Submission Guidelines
AAEE2017 uses a Structured Abstract followed by a Full Paper approach that was first introduced at AAEE2012. Authors initially submit a Structured Abstract and then they receive constructive feedback on the abstract before being invited to submit the Full Paper. Full papers undergo peer review prior to being accepted and published in the conference proceedings. All Structured Abstracts and Full Papers must be related to engineering education and ideally, but not necessarily, to the theme of the conference: “Integrated Engineering”. All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference.
Papers should align with one of the following conference themes or special sessions. Inclusion in a special session will be at the discretion of the Program Committee, in consultation with the Session Moderator. Accepted papers not included in a special session will be included in general conference sessions.
Workshop submission is also desirable, this is a 90-minute interactive session that will be considered in addition to the listed conference and special themed sessions. These workshops are intended to engage with audience members via a structured and shared learning experience using a range of applicable activities. There will be a limited number of workshops selected and the evaluation of the workshops will be decided by the Organising Committee. Authors are advised to be as detailed as possible in their proposal as possible. Please download the workshop proposal template from below.
Conference Themes:
C1: Integration of theory and practice in the learning and teaching process
C2: Interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary engineering programs and learning environments
C3: Integration of teaching and research in the engineering training process
C4: The role and impact of engineering students and educators in the wider community
C5: Systems perspectives on engineering education
Focus Sessions:
S1: Is Integrated Engineering Education Necessary?
| Moderators: Dawn Bennett (Curtin University) and Sally Male (The University of Western Australia)
S2: Educating the Edisons of the 21st Century: integrating thinking heuristics (including TRIZ) into the engineering curriculum.
| Moderator: Iouri Belski (RMIT)
S3: Integrating Humanitarianism in Engineering Education
| Moderators: Jeremy Smith (Australian National University) and Andrea Mazzurco (The University of Queensland)
Workshop Abstracts are to be a max of 2 pages in length and are to be submitted through the Submission Portal using the abstract template provided. Authors must indicate which theme or special session best fits their submissions.
Each workshop is a 90 minute interactive session and the submission will be evaluated by the Organising Committee. The submission template is found below. Each workshop application needs to clearly state how the proposed workshop will engage audience members in a structured and shared learning experience. For example, the workshop may include small group activities, dedicated time for discussion, audience response devices, or the use of computers in a computer laboratory.
Possible workshop ideas include:
- Brainstorming a particular issue in engineering education, for example how to appeal to different types of learners (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) in tutorial activities.
- Discussing and modelling a particular interactive teaching strategy (e.g. audience response devices such as live polling).
- Guiding participants through a demonstration of some education software package.
- Topics that fit within the theme of the conference: “The Changing Role of the Engineering Educator for developing the Future Engineer”.
The key focus of each workshop must be concerned with audience interaction and participant learning. While there can be some content delivery at the beginning of the session (and other times throughout the session as needed), there should not be excessive presentation of material that occupies a significant portion of the session.

Structured Paper Abstracts are to be 1 page in length and are to be submitted through the Submission Portal using the abstract template provided. Authors must indicate which theme or special session best fits their submissions.
Click to download structured abstract template
Full Papers are recommended to be 5-8 pages in total. The Structured Abstract will form the first page of the Full Paper and hence the abstract is to be limited to 1 page. The conference proceedings will contain all accepted Full Papers and will be published in an electronic format. In addition, a Book of Abstracts will also be published that contains a collection of all one-page Structured Abstracts that form the first page of each Full Paper. The Book of Abstracts will be published in print and electronic formats.
Full papers are to be submitted through the Submission Portal using the paper template provided on the submissions page of the conference website. In the Full Paper, the authors must identify the theme or special session that their paper falls within. At least one author of a Full Paper must register (with payment) to attend the conference and present the paper in order for the Full Paper to be published in the conference proceedings. Submissions must be original and have followed research ethics protocols where necessary and required.
Each full paper submitted will be subjected to a double-blind peer review process (i.e. two reviewers will assess the paper without knowing the identity of the author(s) of the manuscript submitted, as well as the author(s) not knowing who the reviewers were). Authors are to therefore omit their names and affiliations in their full paper submission and to also remove text in the paper that may identify themselves and/or their affiliations during the peer review. Names and affiliations, as well as any modified text to the paper regarding anonymity, is to be added into the final (Camera Ready) version of the paper. Further details about the peer review process can be found in the paper template. Authors are also requested to adhere to the key dates.
During the submission of the full paper submission, you will be required to accept the Copyright and Licence Agreement by checking the relevant box.

Workshops submissions are to be submitted via the Submission Portal and will be evaluated by the Organising Committee. The submission template is provided on the submissions page of the conference website. Each workshop application needs to clearly state how the proposed workshop will engage audience members in a structured and shared learning experience. For example, the workshop may include small group activities, dedicated time for discussion, or audience response devices.
All questions about submissions should be emailed to the Program Committee Chair Dr Nazmul Huda: nazmul.huda@mq.edu.au

Keynote speakers include:
Lindie Clark (Academic and Programs director, PACE, Macquarie University) (click to download to the plenary presentation)
Lindie Clark is the Academic and Programs Director of Macquarie University’s unique Professional and Community Engagement program (PACE). PACE provides work integrated learning experiences to all undergraduate students at Macquarie as an integral part of their study program. Prior to taking up this role she was the Director of the University’s Health Studies program, where she ran a PACE unit for many years. With two other colleagues, she was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for ‘Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’ for efforts in building Sustainable Work-Integrated-Learning programs in the Faculty of Science. Prior to joining Macquarie University Lindie worked in a range of regulatory agencies in the health, employment and industrial relations fields. As a Harkness Fellow she completed a Master of Public Administration at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in the mid-1990s. Lindie is also a Trustee of the Dusseldorp Skills Forum, a not-for-profit organisation that works to enhance the opportunities for education, skills and employment for all young people, particularly those who don’t succeed in the ‘mainstream’. Seeing students apply their university learning in real world settings, and in so doing realise the valuable contribution they can make to the broader community, is one of the most rewarding Learning and Teaching experiences Lindie has had in her career. PACE extends such opportunities to all Macquarie students.
